Architectural and decorative

Architectural or decorative coatings represent the largest proportion of the global surface coatings market. They are suitable for use on aluminium, building surfaces, cotton fabrics, glass, metals, metal foils, paper, plastic, steel and wool.

Pure acrylic formulations are used in both interior and exterior applications. However, it is the superior durability and UV resistance of acrylic-based systems that differentiate them from competitive products and make them particularly suitable for exterior coatings. Coatings are primarily waterborne emulsions, which combine methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a hard momoner and a softer acrylate monomer to improve flexibility. A small amount of (meth)acrylic acid monomer is usually added in order to provide latex stability and improved substrate adhesion.

Industrial

Industrial coatings cover a number of applications including: automotive, can and protective coatings, traffic paints, adhesives, printing inks and overprint varnishes. Methacrylates deliver superior durability, improved UV stability, good gloss retention, excellent water resistance and non-yellowing performance characteristics.

Automotive

The properties of acrylic coatings make them ideal for automotive topcoats, where they provide a rich gloss effect as well as protection from mechanical and chemical attack. The move to meet ever more stringent environmental needs means the market is moving towards water-based solid coatings and a greater use of MMA.

Can

Can coatings provide a barrier between a can and its contents and must meet appropriate food regulations. Acrylics provide good pigment wetting and resistance to discolouring, especially for seams in three-piece cans. Performance characteristics of can coatings are increasingly demanding due to the use of thinner, more flexible steel and the introduction of more aggressive contents, such as isontonic drink flavourings.

Maintenance

Automotive refinish coatings are use in the repair of car bodies and commercial vehicles. Unlike automotive coatings they are applied at ambient temperature and require fast curing and good hardness. Acrylics are combined with other chemicals to deliver a highly durable, gloss coating.

Traffic

Traffic paints are used on roads, at airports, and in parking areas, garages and warehouses to mark traffic lanes and parking lots. Waterborne acrylics offer excellent weatherability, good adhesion to reflective glass beads as well as chemical and abrasion resistance.

Marine and Corrosion control

Marine and corrosion control coatings provide protection in and around steel structures associated with industrial production and transport. Vinyl ester resins used in these coatings feature methacrylic acid, which provides enhanced performance properties.

Anaerobic adhesives

Anaerobic adhesives cure rapidly to form tough, durable bondlines with structural strength and form a highly effective coating or sealant. The adhesive is designed for use as a sole attachment device durable enough to be considered as a ‘chemical fastner’. The use of methacrylic acid supports multiple curing methods including UV. UV curing grades of aerobic acrylics yield tough, impact-resistant, structural adhesives with tensile strength up to 3000psi when joining metal, plastic, glass, ceramics and other substrates. The technology is able to deliver transparent optical adhesives.
