SpMAs

Speciality Monomers (SpMAs) form a separate category of monomer-based products. Chemical modification enhances the properties of the monomers, which are then used in more specialised end-applications where one or more particular performance characteristics are required.

With production facilities in both America and Europe, Lucite International is a global supplier of all the major speciality monomers, which can be split broadly into three categories:

Methacrylic Acid – properties such as adhesion, improved pigment wetting and cross linking ability make it ideal for use in flexible and semi-rigid packaging for the food industry, automotive, architectural and industrial coatings, floor polishes and textile finishes as well as coatings for golf balls.

Speciality Methacrylates – where properties such as weatherability, film forming, gloss finish, solubility, toughness and fast curing properties are used to beneficial effect in electronics, toys, adhesives, inks and high performance coatings.

One of the biggest growth sectors for Lucite International's Speciality Monomers is in surface coatings, which include automotive finishes, lubricants, inks and adhesives. The surface coatings industry has shown growth due to the superior durability offered by these products. Add in worldwide environmental legislation, which is driving the increased use of waterborne coatings with low solvency ratings, and it is clear that this is an area of major potential.
